How We Designed the Neuro IQ Test: Behind the Science

14 May 2025

What does it really mean to measure intelligence? At Neuro IQ, we set out to create more than just another online quiz — we wanted a scientifically grounded, psychometrically sound assessment that reflects the complexity of human cognition. Here’s how we built it.

Rooted in Cognitive Science

The Neuro IQ Test is built on the Cattell–Horn–Carroll (CHC) Theory of Intelligence, one of the most widely accepted models in modern cognitive psychology. CHC breaks intelligence down into broad domains such as fluid reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and visual processing — each representing unique cognitive strengths. Our goal was to design an experience that doesn’t just give you a score, but offers insight into these underlying abilities.

Five Domains, Fifty Questions

To reflect this model, the Neuro IQ Test includes 50 multiple-choice questions divided across five key domains:

  • Logical Reasoning

  • Verbal Intelligence

  • Mathematical Ability

  • Visual/Spatial Reasoning

  • Pattern Recognition

Each question is carefully designed to isolate and challenge one specific domain. For example, a logic puzzle may test your ability to evaluate conditions and outcomes under pressure, while a spatial problem might assess your capacity to mentally manipulate shapes.

The Item Design Process

Our question development process combined psychometric best practices with iterative user testing. We began with a large question bank and conducted extensive internal reviews to eliminate bias, ambiguity, and redundancy. Every question was reviewed for clarity, domain alignment, and difficulty distribution.

We also avoided “trick” questions. Our aim is to test reasoning, not catch you off guard.

Standardized Scoring with Real-World Data

A core challenge in designing any cognitive test is ensuring fair and meaningful scoring. That’s why we’ve calibrated our scoring model using data from a diverse pool of real test-takers across age groups, cultures, and educational backgrounds. This allows us to:

  • Assign percentile rankings based on population averages

  • Identify domain-specific strengths

  • Ensure scores are comparable and interpretable

As more users take the test, our algorithm continues to refine itself — enhancing the reliability and accuracy of every result.

Why It Matters

We believe intelligence is multidimensional and should be measured with nuance. Whether you're curious about your cognitive profile or aiming to improve specific skills, the Neuro IQ Test offers more than a number — it’s a personalized snapshot of how your mind works.
